Goals

  • Support and enhance the efforts of literacy and adult education providers
  • Build awareness of literacy issues
  • Identify and respond to emerging literacy needs and gaps in services
  • Improve the literacy of the workforce
  • Research implementing ALERT (Adult Literacy Education Resource Training)

Specifics

  • The chapter is becoming a provider of literacy services by providing training for tutors and participating in matching learners with tutors
  • The chapter is a part of the Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee which raises awareness of literacy issues in the county 
  • The chapter is working in partnership with other literacy providers in the county to ensure delivery of services to a broader spectrum of citizens

Volunteers are needed for the following:

  • Financial support of projects
  • Tutors for those wanting to learn to read
  • Readers for local schools and day care centers (Baby Talk)
  • Visitors for mothers of newborns at Baptist Medical Center (Baby Talk)
