Other Volunteer Opportunities

Partners in Reading/United We Read
Volunteers are placed in elementary schools throughout the Birmingham area during the school year to help at-risk students learn to read. Sometimes volunteers read books to the children and sometimes the children read books to the volunteer.  A special emphasis is placed on Black History Month.  Each February, we host United We Read Day.  We place over 400 volunteers throughout 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms.  The volunteers read books which celebrate learning and the African American culture.

Helpline Follow-Up
Our Helpline Volunteers make follow-up telephone calls to individuals who have called The Literacy Council Helpline (1-800-448-READ or 205-326-1925) within the previous three months to see if they have been placed with a literacy provider to meet their needs.

ALERT coordination
ALERT (Adult Literacy Education/Resource Training) is a training program designed to help community practitioners identify individuals with low reading skills and get them help.  Volunteers will work with the Community Outreach Coordinator to schedule and coordinate ALERT workshops throughout the five-county area.  Volunteers will also assist in production of ALERT training materials.

Office Assistance

Volunteers are always needed to assist with the day-to-day operations at The Literacy Council.  Volunteers can help with: data entry, tutor database, provider database, follow-up phone calls, mailings, labeling books, preparation for and help during special events and fundraisers etc.
