Literacy Resources for Tutors
The Literacy Council offers training workshops for
volunteers interested in becoming basic literacy and ESOL
(English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutors. Both
training sessions are 5 hours long and are administered in two two-and-a-half hour
workshops held on the second and third Tuesday of most months. Training is free, but a materials charge
may apply. Click here to register for a tutor training workshop.
You could be the person that changes someone’s life by giving him or her the gift of reading. If you can read, you can help break the cycle of illiteracy.
There are more than 90,000 adults in this area that need help improving their reading skills. These individuals have problems completing everyday tasks such as filling out a job application, reading a prescription drug label, writing a check, reading a map, or reading bedtime stories to children or grandchildren. Illiteracy is also a contributing factor to many social problems including unemployment, poverty, crime, and violence. Illiteracy is generational; the children of illiterate parents are twice as likely as their peers to be illiterate. More than 40% of children entering fourth grade are unable to read at grade level.
Hispanics account for more than half of the population growth in the United States this decade, and all the counties served by The Literacy Council have seen significant increases in this population. Blount County, for instance, has seen an 852% growth in the Hispanic population since 1990. Unfortunately, the special needs of those learning English as a second language are largely left unmet, especially in rural communities. Due to the general population growth and this tremendous growth in Hispanic and other immigrant populations, the demand for trained tutors to teach people to read, write, and speak English is greater than ever.
