Goals
- St. Clair County Literacy Council is making aggressive moves to reduce the 20% illiteracy rate in St. Clair
- Build awareness of literacy issues
- Identify and respond to emerging literacy needs and gaps in services
- Conduct ALERT
Specifics
4 new programs have been implemented including:
- St. Clair Reads! - A countywide effort with tutors provided at 4 libraries, 5 days a week offering reading improvement classes for adults 18 and over.
- St. Clair Reads in Schools! - A community reading program staffed by volunteers who will go into the schools for a reading day; delivering free books to children and the opportunity for parents to sign up for personalized or group reading instruction.
- Reading Rocks! - A reading fair and community awareness program
- ALERT (Adult Literacy Education Resource Training) - 70 people in the community service programs have received ALERT training to identify and refer people who need reading improvements skills
The Literacy Council – St. Clair County Chapter has:
- Added 4 new board members to our team
- Received a $1000.00 donation from Wal-Mart in Springville
- Trained 14 new tutors
Volunteers are needed for the following:
The St. Clair Chapter needs volunteers to assist with the implementation of special events, community outreach, administrative work, delivering flyers, meeting with special interest groups, church's etc.
Tutors are needed for the St. Clair Reads! program at Moody and Odenville libraries.
The St. Clair Chapter would also like to schedule a tutor training program in the fall.
