United We Read
United We Read is a volunteer reading program to encourage the love of reading in children at risk for failing. Adult volunteers read carefully selected books in classrooms, the books are donated to the school classroom libraries, and each student receives a book to take home. For many of these children, this book is their entire home library.
Reading aloud to children helps them develop language and listening skills, learn new words, improve and increase their attention span, and recognize that reading is fun and valuable. Bringing adults into their classrooms shows these children that we know they are important and that reading is important. Be a part of it by sponsoring a classroom for only $25!
“See, the more we read the smarter we’ll
get!” That’s what one of the children
told the principal of Wenonah Elementary, and that’s
why we do it.

The Signature Series is one of Birmingham’s premier events—bringing prominent authors to some of Birmingham’s most beautiful homes for private cocktail receptions. Patrons enjoy an intimate evening of stimulating conversation with some of America’s most fascinating authors, and receive a signed first-edition of the author’s latest work.
