Read to Children
Today’s children are the business leaders, healthcare professionals, and elected officials of tomorrow. Children discover possibilities through books as they develop a love of reading. But sadly, studies have found there are very few age-appropriate books in the homes of low-income children.

The Literacy Council is helping to foster the love of reading through United We Read, a program that coordinates volunteers reading to school classrooms, and which gives each child in the classroom a book of his or her own to keep.
On April 14th of 2010, The Literacy Council will team up with Better Basics to expand United We Read to ALL kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Birmingham city schools, as part of Birmingham Reads. Through this partnership, we will give away more than 16,000 books to local children!
We need your help! By volunteering about an hour of your time, you can make a difference by reading to a classroom of children and sharing the love of reading.
Please fill out and submit the volunteer interest form, and we will contact you about reading to children during our next United We Read.
