Throughout the year, The Literacy Council holds events that raise money for literacy while generating awareness of literacy issues throughout the community. Join us this year for one or more of the following special events:

Signature Series

The Signature Series annually brings three prominent authors to some of Birmingham’s most beautiful homes for private cocktail receptions. Patrons spend the evening with one of America’s most fascinating authors and receive a signed first edition of the author’s latest work. The name of the featured author and the date of the event are confirmed approximately two months before each party.

Past authors include: Cokie Roberts, Kathryn Stockett, Kim Sunée, Richard North Patterson, Rick Bragg, Delta Burke, Shelley Stewart, Dixie Carter, Mark Childress, Charlton Heston, Howell Raines, and Tracy Chevalier.

The Literacy Council’s first Signature Series event of 2010 will feature author Olga Grushin on Thursday, April 22nd at 6:30 p.m. The venue will be a private residence.

Olga Grushin Olga Grushin is the author of the novels The Line (forthcoming, April 2010) and The Dream Life of Sukhanov (2006), as well as short stories, literary criticism, essays, and other works. She was awarded the 2007 New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award and named one of the Best Young American Novelists by Granta magazine. Her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in The New York Times, Granta, The Guardian, Partisan Review, Vogue, and other publications.

You can purchase a 2010 subscription to the Signature Series—three events, each showcasing a different author—on-line at or call (205) 326-1925 or 1-888-448-7323. Tickets to all three events are $600 per couple or $350 per individual.  Tickets are $125 per individual for the Olga Grushin event alone. Guests will receive a signed, hardbound copy of The Line. Signature Series subscriptions are limited in order to preserve the intimacy of each reception. Proceeds benefit The Literacy Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening and supporting organizations that provide literacy services in central Alabama.
