Resources and Referrals

  • Refer tutors and learners to adult, children and family literacy programs through the (205) 326-1925 and 1-888-448-READ Helpline
  • Award grant funding directly to literacy providers; secure and distribute books and in-kind donations; and assist providers with grant writing
  • Encourage networking and cooperative efforts between members of the family and Literacy Providers Network to ensure that learner and tutor needs are being met and gaps in services are being filled
  • Develop strategic plan for community-wide literacy initiatives
  • Provide direct staff support to Literacy Council boards in outlying counties

Education

  • Provide free tutor training workshops throughout Central Alabama
  • Administer Adult Literacy Education Resource Training (ALERT) to community practitioners
  • Host workshops and seminars for local literacy providers

Advocacy and Awareness

  • Co-sponsor the annual Literacy Summit
  • Promote children and family literacy involvement through AdventuREAD
  • Conduct public awareness campaigns to heighten the importance of adult, family, and children’s literacy initiatives
  • Develop marketing campaigns using television, radio, and print media to recruit both learners and tutor

Development

  • Develop additional resources to support ongoing and new literacy initiatives
  • Host annual fundraising events
  • Expand vision for future through ongoing strategic planning to align our mission with the growing needs of the community
