Goals

  •   – Support and enhance the efforts of literacy and adult education providers
  •   – Build awareness of literacy issues
  •   – Identify and respond to emerging literacy needs and gaps in services
  •   – Improve the literacy of the workforce
  •   – Research implementing ALERT (Adult Literacy Education Resource Training)

Specifics

  •   – The chapter provides tutor training and matches tutors with learners.
  •   – The chapter is a sponsor of the Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, which raises awareness of literacy issues in the county
  •   – The chapter is working in partnership with other literacy providers in the county to ensure delivery of services to a      broader spectrum of citizens

 

Volunteers are needed for the following:

 

  •   – Financial support.
  •   – Tutoring.
  •   – Book Buddies to read at local schools and day care centers.
  •   – Visitors for mothers of newborns at Baptist Medical Center.
  •   – Office work and assistance with mailings.
