Goals
- – To reduce the 12% illiteracy rate in St. Clair County.
- – Build awareness of literacy issues
- – Identify and respond to emerging literacy needs and gaps in services
- – Conduct ALERT (Adult Literacy Education Resource Training)
Specifics
Programs implemented in St. Clair County include:
- – St. Clair Reads in Schools! - A community reading program staffed by volunteers who will go into the schools for a reading day; delivering free books to children and inviting parents to sign up for personalized or group reading instruction.
- – Reading Rocks! - A reading fair and community awareness program
- – ALERT - 70 people in the community service programs have received ALERT training to identify and refer people who need reading improvements skills
- – The Literacy Council is available to present informational programs about our organization to churches, schools, and other groups.
The Literacy Council – St. Clair County Chapter has:
- – Added 4 new board members to our team
- – Received a $1000.00 donation from Wal-Mart in Springville
- – Trained 14 new tutors in 2009
Volunteers are needed for the following:
- – The St. Clair Chapter needs volunteers for special events and community outreach, administrative work, delivering fliers, meeting with special interest groups, faith-based organizations, etc.
- – Tutors are needed for the St. Clair Reads! program at Moody and Odenville libraries.
